Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by individual traders, tends to aggregate diverse perspectives and can sometimes offer more accurate predictions, especially as the event approaches and more volume is traded. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on player form, potential upsets, or even external factors influencing the match. It’s useful to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe a particular player will win, the higher the price of shares related to that player will climb. This dynamic pricing ensures the market constantly adjusts to new information and changing sentiment. The current implied probabilities are derived from the share prices and trading activity.
