Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments. If there’s significant disagreement between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, as traders attempt to profit from the discrepancy. It's common to see prediction markets move more efficiently as new information becomes available, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities than those found at traditional sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive its price up, indicating increased confidence in that result. The current price is determined entirely by supply and demand within Polymarket.
