Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by professional oddsmakers, while this market's pricing is driven by supply and demand among individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies emerge, especially when public sentiment diverges from the initial assessment of oddsmakers. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders attempt to profit from the price variations between the two types of markets. However, it's important to note that both types of odds represent probabilities of an outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome of the Matsuda vs Kim fight. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants. The market’s current price represents the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the traders on Polymarket. The higher the price, the more likely traders believe that outcome will happen.
