Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can take the opposite position, driving the price on Polymarket towards what they perceive as the true probability. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a substantial amount of trading volume has occurred.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket—traders are incentivized to accurately assess the probability of the match result, leading to potentially more informative odds than traditional sources.
