Often, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced a player's chances, the odds here can move in the opposite direction. It's common to see discrepancies, particularly before a lot of money has been wagered on either side, revealing differing perspectives on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a player, the price increases, indicating growing confidence in their victory. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price, suggesting decreasing confidence. The market dynamically adjusts to incorporate new information and trader sentiment, creating a real-time assessment of the match's potential results.
