Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, which can differ from sportsbook odds set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public betting patterns and risk management into their pricing, while this market relies on individuals directly expressing their beliefs about the outcome. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant news or events impact perceptions. Analyzing these differences can reveal insights into where the crowd believes there is value or mispricing compared to traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately reflecting the market's implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific player, the price increases, indicating a growing expectation of their victory. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its predictions.
