Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own informed opinions. If there's a significant discrepancy, arbitrage opportunities may emerge, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to note that prediction market odds can be more sensitive to new information and shifts in public perception than traditional sportsbook lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
