Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public sentiment strongly diverges from expert analysis. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on power rankings and statistics, the trading activity in this market incorporates a broader range of information and real-time adjustments as new data emerges.
Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can differ due to several factors. Each platform has its own user base, trading dynamics, and fee structure, all of which influence price discovery. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Furthermore, the liquidity—or volume—on each platform can vary significantly, impacting how quickly prices react to new information. Differences in market design, such as the types of contracts offered (spreads versus simple win/loss outcomes), also contribute to price discrepancies. These variations create opportunities for arbitrage, where traders attempt to profit from price differences across platforms.
