Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on internal models and risk management, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis. It's common to see discrepancies, especially when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Comparing the two can reveal where the crowd believes there’s value, and whether the market is anticipating factors not fully captured by sportsbook algorithms.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of success. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own assessments of the event’s likelihood. This dynamic pricing creates a real-time forecast of the event’s outcome.
