Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook odds which can be influenced by factors like public perception or promotional offers. Sportsbooks may adjust their lines based on betting action, but this market allows for continuous price discovery driven by informed traders. While sportsbooks focus on maximizing profit, prediction markets aim for accurate probability assessments. It’s common to see prediction market prices converge towards the true outcome probability as the event approaches, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of participants, constantly adjusting as new information becomes available and opinions shift. The current trading volume indicates the level of interest and conviction surrounding the potential results.
