Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows participants to freely express their beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may signal an opportunity for arbitrage, though transaction fees and settlement timing should be considered. It's common to see this market adjust rapidly to new information, potentially leading to odds movements that diverge from initial sportsbook offerings.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price fluctuates, reflecting the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's depth – the number of shares available at different price points – also influences price discovery, providing a more nuanced view than a simple probability estimate.
