Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi, often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. This can lead to discrepancies, as prediction markets may incorporate information not fully captured by sportsbook algorithms. However, both aim to accurately forecast the probability of events, and comparing them can offer valuable insights into public sentiment and potential value.
Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can diverge due to several factors. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts a different pool of traders with varying expertise and risk tolerance, leading to differing interpretations of the same information. Additionally, the specific rules and fee structures on each platform can influence trading behavior and price discovery. Market design choices, such as the types of orders allowed or the availability of leverage, can also contribute to price discrepancies. Finally, temporary imbalances in supply and demand on one platform can create short-term price differences.
