Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective wisdom of traders, who aim to accurately predict the outcome. As a result, you may find that the implied probabilities in this market differ from sportsbook offerings, potentially offering value to informed bettors who can identify discrepancies. It’s important to compare and contrast to form your own informed opinion.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence of all participants. The current price reflects what traders are willing to pay for exposure to a specific result.
