Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while Polymarket allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences, especially when public sentiment strongly deviates from the sportsbook's initial assessment. It’s common to see this market’s implied probabilities shift as new information emerges or as more traders participate, potentially offering advantages over fixed-odds betting. Analyzing these differences can reveal valuable insights into the wisdom of the crowd.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell contracts representing their belief about the outcome of the Peretiatko vs. Kim match. The price of each contract reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy a contract, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability, and vice versa. This creates a dynamic pricing system where the market consensus is constantly updated based on trader activity. The current price essentially represents the collective prediction of all participants.
