Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance their risk, incorporating a profit margin, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs about the event’s probability. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public opinion diverges from expert analysis. Examining these differences can reveal insights into market sentiment and potentially identify undervalued or overvalued outcomes. It's important to note that this market represents a distinct forecast, independent of traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined by supply and demand, and traders can adjust their positions based on new information or changing opinions. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective forecast.
