Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi, often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while prediction markets allow traders to freely express their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public opinion diverges from expert analysis. While sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission, prediction markets generally have lower transaction costs. Comparing the odds across both types of platforms can provide a more informed view of the potential outcome of this market.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi may differ due to variations in user base, trading activity, and market-specific rules. Each platform attracts a different set of traders with varying levels of expertise and information. These differences in participation can influence price discovery. Additionally, the liquidity and volume on each platform can impact how quickly prices react to new information. While both platforms track the same underlying event – the Penguins-Blue Jackets game – these factors can create temporary price discrepancies between them.
