Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market aggregates the predictions of many individual traders. If a significant difference exists between the two, it could indicate that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the outcome. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities based on different methodologies and information sets, and discrepancies are common.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. The market's depth and volume indicate the level of confidence traders have in their predictions.
