Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring as assessed by traders. This market, like others, can sometimes show divergence from sportsbook lines, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to breaking news or insider information than sportsbooks, potentially offering a more accurate assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform uses an automated market maker (AMM) model, meaning there isn’t a traditional order book; instead, prices are determined by a mathematical formula based on the ratio of shares representing each outcome. This creates a liquid market where traders can easily express their views.
