Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individuals trading on their own insights. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Comparing the odds can reveal where the market believes sportsbooks may be over or underestimating a particular outcome, providing a valuable data point for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is visible on the dashboard, and traders can adjust their positions based on new information or changes in sentiment. The total volume traded contributes to the market's overall efficiency and accuracy.
