Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market's odds are driven by supply and demand. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or breaking news. Analyzing these differences can be valuable, as prediction markets sometimes incorporate information that isn’t immediately reflected in sportsbook lines. However, both represent probabilities of the same event occurring.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price movements are driven by the collective beliefs and actions of participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event’s potential results. The current volume indicates the level of interest in each possible outcome.
