Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can express that view through their trades, potentially leading to odds discrepancies. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information and viewpoints that sportsbooks might overlook, or react more quickly to breaking news.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the collective assessment of the event's potential results. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price discovery process is driven by supply and demand; increased buying pressure raises prices, while increased selling pressure lowers them, ultimately establishing a consensus view.
