Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own research and insights. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. Analyzing these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making, but it's important to remember that both represent probabilities, not guarantees of the outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities in response to changing sentiment. The current price reflects the aggregated assessment of all traders participating in this market.
