Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can express that view through trading activity, driving the prediction market price closer to their assessment. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of information is available, but these tend to narrow as the event approaches and more data becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing on Polymarket.
