Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. Therefore, discrepancies can emerge as new information becomes available or public sentiment shifts. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to breaking news or changes in team dynamics than traditional sportsbooks, offering a potentially more up-to-date assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price adjusts to reflect the collective intelligence of the crowd. The current price indicates the market's assessment of the likelihood of the event happening, and fluctuations in price signal changes in that assessment. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information.
