Prediction market odds often offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while prediction markets are driven by the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to differences in probabilities and implied outcomes. While sportsbooks may initially set the odds based on team rankings and statistics, this market reflects a dynamic assessment of information as it becomes available, potentially incorporating factors overlooked by traditional oddsmakers. Both offer valuable insights, but prediction markets can sometimes provide a more nuanced view.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract.
