Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when there’s significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Comparing the odds can reveal where the crowd’s expectations diverge from those of professional oddsmakers, offering insights into potential value or overlooked factors influencing the game.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each possible outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the pricing. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its predictions accordingly.
