Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, and can sometimes differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant discrepancy emerges between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the market perceives information differently than bookmakers, or that one venue has a more efficient market. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand from traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority setting the odds.
