Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, leading to odds that can diverge from those found at sportsbooks. It’s common to see differences emerge as new information becomes available or as public sentiment shifts, providing a valuable comparison point for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately reflecting the collective probability assigned to each team winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the market’s expectation, and traders aim to profit by accurately predicting the result. Higher volume generally indicates greater confidence and liquidity in the market.
