Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by analysts, while this market is driven by the collective predictions of traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early on, as prediction markets can quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities based on a wider range of factors. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making, but ultimately, they represent different approaches to forecasting the outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and place bets, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. Higher volume generally indicates greater confidence in a particular outcome, while price movements signal shifts in expectations. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket.
