Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on models and internal analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital at risk. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there's strong public sentiment or information not yet fully incorporated into sportsbook lines. It’s common to see differences in implied probabilities between this market and those offered by sportsbooks, particularly as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different possible exact scores. The price of each share reflects the market’s assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the collective belief. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movement is influenced by various factors, including news, team form, injuries, and overall market sentiment. The more shares purchased for a specific outcome, the higher its price will climb, indicating increased confidence.
