Typically, prediction markets like Polymarket can offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess the probability of each outcome. If prediction market odds significantly diverge from sportsbook odds, it might suggest that market participants have access to information or insights not fully reflected in the sportsbook's pricing. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities as perceived by different groups.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will occur, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd participating on Polymarket.
