Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own informed opinions. If there’s a significant discrepancy, arbitrage opportunities may arise, as traders could potentially profit by betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to note that prediction market odds can be more sensitive to new information and shifts in sentiment, potentially reacting faster than traditional sportsbooks. This can lead to a dynamic comparison over time.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, while increased selling pressure will lower it. This dynamic process ensures that the market price continuously incorporates new information and evolving expectations.
