Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring as assessed by traders. It’s common to see differences between the two, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Analyzing these discrepancies can reveal insights into where the 'wisdom of the crowd' differs from professional oddsmakers for this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. The current price indicates what traders are willing to pay for a share, essentially betting on the likelihood of a particular player winning the match.
