Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and need to account for profit margins, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs about the outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, attracting traders who attempt to profit from the difference. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster than sportsbooks to incorporate new information, as they are continuously updated by a large number of participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined by supply and demand, with traders acting as both market makers and informed speculators. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly adjust to new information and reflect the collective intelligence of the participants.
