Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates insights from individuals with varying levels of knowledge and perspectives. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamics of supply and demand within the prediction market. Examining these differences can reveal where the crowd believes sportsbooks may be over or underestimating a particular outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adapt to new information and changing sentiment.
