Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by individual traders, tends to aggregate diverse perspectives and can sometimes offer more accurate probabilities, especially as new information emerges. It's common to see discrepancies, as prediction markets allow for more dynamic adjustments based on collective belief.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability distribution. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will occur, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the market participants.
