Frequently asked questions

Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially offering different insights than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and often incorporate a margin for profit. This market, however, is driven by individuals trading based on their own research and beliefs. While sportsbooks may initially have different probabilities assigned to each outcome, the prediction market can evolve as new information becomes available and more traders participate. It's valuable to compare the two to gain a broader perspective on the likely result.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregate assessment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time forecast. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the probabilities are constantly updated based on trading activity.
