Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information, as traders can react quickly to developments. Comparing the odds can reveal where the crowd believes there's value, potentially highlighting opportunities for informed betting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people trade, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, while increased selling pressure will lower it. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence.
