Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome, while this market allows traders to directly assess the probability of an event. This can lead to discrepancies, with prediction markets sometimes offering more favorable odds, especially when there is disagreement between the 'wisdom of the crowd' and the sportsbook's initial assessment. It is important to compare both to make informed decisions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of shares is determined by supply and demand, and the market aims to converge towards the true probability of the event occurring as new information becomes available. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on collective intelligence.
