Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. This can be due to the wisdom of the crowd effect, where the collective predictions of many individuals can be more accurate than those of a few experts. While sportsbooks may initially set lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that reflect a broader range of information and insights. It’s valuable to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability distribution. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the market participants and provides a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
