Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event occurring, as determined by traders. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market allows the wisdom of the crowd to influence pricing. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, information access, and risk tolerance among participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market's collective belief about the probability of that outcome. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect new information and changing sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and the total volume traded provides insight into the level of interest and confidence in each possible result.
