Often, prediction market odds can differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the differing incentives of participants. Sportsbooks aim to profit by setting lines that attract balanced betting, while prediction market participants are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to prediction markets reflecting a 'wisdom of the crowd' effect, potentially providing a more accurate assessment of probabilities than traditional sources. However, discrepancies can occur based on public perception, information availability, and the specific dynamics of this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The closer the event gets, the more sensitive the price becomes to new information and shifts in sentiment. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the traders participating in this market.
