Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which are set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public betting patterns and risk management into their lines. This market, however, is driven by individuals forecasting the outcome based on their own research and analysis. Significant discrepancies between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds can sometimes present arbitrage opportunities, though these are often quickly exploited. It's important to consider the different motivations and information sources behind each type of oddsmaking.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants trading on Polymarket. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities as the event approaches.
