Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant difference exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both platforms. It’s also common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information or changing circumstances than sportsbooks, as the continuous trading process incorporates updates rapidly. Examining these differences can offer valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective intelligence of the traders participating, and is constantly adjusting based on new information and sentiment. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains a responsive indicator of expectations.
