Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market relies on individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially when public sentiment strongly favors a particular outcome or when new information emerges that hasn't been fully incorporated into sportsbook lines. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights into the perceived value of various outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price of shares fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus.
