Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, while this market allows a broader range of participants to express their beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists, it could indicate that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities, and neither is guaranteed to be accurate. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive understanding of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and share their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, and is not influenced by any external factors or predetermined formulas. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
