Frequently asked questions

Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take the opposite position, driving the price on Polymarket towards what they perceive as the true probability. This dynamic can lead to interesting discrepancies and opportunities for informed traders.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price. This creates a dynamic pricing system driven entirely by supply and demand, resulting in a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
