Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of individuals willing to put their capital at risk. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Comparing the implied probabilities from both sources can highlight areas where the crowd diverges from professional oddsmakers, potentially revealing undervalued or overvalued outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's efficiency is driven by traders attempting to profit from perceived mispricings, constantly adjusting the odds based on new information and their own analysis.
