Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individual traders. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to developments than traditional sportsbooks, as the continuous trading process incorporates new data almost instantly. However, sportsbooks may offer different types of wagers not available in this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and there is no central authority setting the odds. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly adapt to new information and changing perceptions.
