Currently, prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. This can be due to the wisdom of the crowd effect, where the collective predictions of many individuals can be more accurate than those of a few experts. While sportsbooks set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that diverge from sportsbook offerings. It’s important to compare both to gain a comprehensive understanding of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived chance of success. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregate sentiment of all traders participating in this market, and is constantly updating as new information becomes available.
